1. What else will I need to operate my tractor?
Nothing, all our tractors are assembled and ready for your next job, however it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with basic tractor and implement operation, features, and functions if you are inexperienced with tractors.  The fluids and filters have been changed, however you will need to purchase new fluids and filters for the regular maintenance required.

3. What is the warranty?
Mahindra now comes with an industry best 7 year parts & labor powertrain warranty on their compact tractors and their utility tractors carry a 5 year powertrain warranty. LS tractors have a 5 year parts & labor powertrain warranty with a 2 year limited full comprehensive warranty with limited hours. Transportation, shipping, and maintenance parts (filters etc.) are not covered.

4. How do I get repair parts and how long does it take?
Some parts are available from stock at The Tractor Company.   For parts that are not already in stock we order direct from the manufacturer. Typical order time is 10-14 days for parts to arrive. There are of course many factors that can extend this time. Parts supply is very good for all of our tractors, but, like all other makes if a part is back ordered it will take more time to arrive.

5. How long will it take to get my tractor?
We stock a number of tractors and implements, which are available immediately, however if we are out of stock or don't carry a specific setup or item, delivery time can vary but USUALLY takes 4 - 6 weeks from the date of our next order. This time frame can INCREASE or decrease depending on factors that are outside of our direct control.  For instance we cannot control the spring rush at the factory (April and May), bad weather, strikes, holidays (In Canada, USA and abroad), and customs inspections. 

6. What is a two stage clutch?
Talon tractors are equiped with a 2 stage clutch.  A 2 stage, or dual clutch means that you have 2 clutch discs, one for the transmission and one for the PTO.  Depressing the clutch pedal in halfway will disengage the transmission and stop the tractor but keep the PTO running.  Depressing the clutch pedal in all the way will disengage the transmission and the PTO, stopping both the tractor and the implement.  Frontier Tractors have a live PTO but not a live independant PTO.

7. Do I have to buy maintenance items (filters, belts, hoses) from The Tractor Company?
No you do not, however, your warranty may be voided if an after market filter were to cause damage.  We stock filters for every tractor we have in inventory.  Remember that standard maintenance items are not covered under your Warranty Policy.

8. If I have a major problem with my tractor, do I take it to The Tractor Company for repair?
Most warranty repairs must be done at The Tractor Company unless otherwise specified.  Most tractor repair facilities can repair your tractor on non-labour warranty. We can have the parts sent direct to the facility of your choice.  Third party Labor, Travel Expenses and Freight are not covered under your Warranty.

9. Are hydrostatic transmissions available as an option?
Hydrostatic transmissions have quickly become the most popular transmission choices due their ease of use and excellent responsiveness. We have hydrostatic transmissions available on most Mahindra and LS tractor models.  

10. Does my tractor use special oils or fluids?
Mahindra and LS tractors require the fluids recommended in your manual. 

For other tractors the engine and injector pump, use heavy duty 15W40 diesel motor oil in summer and 10W-30 diesel oil for winter, or 5W40 synthetic for year round use. We recommend using synthetic oils after your first service.
For the hydraulics, we recommend a good quality tractor transmission-hydraulic fluid (Shell Spirax) or ATF if the hydraulics and transmission share a reservoir otherwise an all-purpose hydraulic fluid is adequate.  Winter hydraulic fluid is necessary for colder temperatures.

For the front differential use 80W90 gear oil or 75W90 synthetic gear oil.
All of these are available from your local auto parts dealers.

11. Can I buy Implements from The Tractor Company?
Yes a full line of Agri-Ease, MK Martin, and Terrain implements are available, as well as various other brands.  We stock most common acreage implements, and any non-stock items will be special ordered from the factory or supplier. see implement page

12. Can I get The Tractor Company to finance my purchase?
Financing is available on approved credit and with a minimum of 10% down, some exceptions apply.   Mahindra tractors have low rate and longer term financing available.  We accept certified checks, Visa, MasterCard, or debit.  An additional fee will be applied to credit card purchases over $3000.00. Contact us for details.

13. Where are your tractors made?

As with all tractors under 100 HP, our tractors come from overseas. Mahindra tractors over 55 horse power are primarily built in India by Mahindra, which is based on International Harvester technology. All MAX & 1600 Series (24 - 38 HP) Mahindra tractors are built in Japan by Mitsubishi. The eMax and 2600 series are built in Korea by TYM. Mahindra implements and attachments are built in Canada, the U.S., or Korea. Kioti and LS Tractors are built in South Korea by Daedong and LS (Leading Solutions). THERE ARE NO COMPLETE TRACTORS UNDER 100HP MANUFACTURED IN NORTH AMERICA!

14. Why 2 different tractor makes?

We offer 2 lines of tractors to fit all tractor shopper's needs. With LS we provide a value tractor with more features and options, excellent performance and superior warranty. Kioti also offers great value and performance with the added bonus of some the best low rate finacing options in the industry. With Mahindra we provide top performing, premium tractors with the best warranty in the industry.

15. Are there any hidden costs?

We don't believe in paying for surprises! We have never charged any customer additional hidden costs. All costs are clearly stated up front and we are happy to provide a written quote upon request. However, human error can occur and the actual price will supercede any price discrepancies or inadvertent admissions.

16. What HP is needed to lift a round bale?

Due to the extreme leverage that large round bales create you will need at least 40 HP to lift your bale with the front end loader. Our Mahindra 1500 series and 2538 tractors can lift round bales on the three point hitch but we do not recommend them as bale handling tractors.

17. Do I have to pay any sales tax?
For Canadian residents there is 5% GST charged on all tractors and implements under 60 PTO hp.  5% PST will be charged on purchases by Saskatchewan residents but exemptions can be made if you have a farm that generates income with a legal land location.

18. Will North American made 3 point implements fit the tractors you sell?
Sure, the tractors we sell up to 50 HP use a category 1 three point hitch system, this is the same standard North American system that has been in use for decades.  Please, never attempt to hook up larger class 2 or 3 implements to any compact tractor by simply down grading the pin sizes.  Class 2 and 3 implements are much larger and thus designed for larger HP tractors.

19. Can I add a backhoe to my tractor later?
Yes, a 3 point hitch mounted backhoe can be purchased at a later date.  A PTO pump must also be added for tractors without rear hydraulics. We do recommend getting the frame mount backhoes designed to fit your specific Mahindra and LS models. 

20. The backhoe looks real nice for my small operation.  Can I put one on my existing brand "X" tractor?
Yes, it is possible and probably cost effective.  Some of our three point hitch backhoes are virtually self-contained.  The hoe and hydraulic reserve tank and controls are all pre mounted to a base plate, and a PTO pump powers it. Quick connect couplers can supply hydraulic pressure to the backhoe if your tractor has remote hydraulics.  It will be necessary to extend the two backhoe hoses and connect them to your pressure source.  This pressure source will either be a PTO mounted hydraulic pump or your tractor may already have an unused set of hydraulic quick connects at the rear.

21. How do I know how many HP I need and what size implements I can use?

Tractors between 22 - 35 HP are typically large enough to handle all of your acreage yard maintenance needs.  View the chart below to see what HP you need to run each implement.  This is a general guideline used for reference only and may or may not work for your specific application.  The brand of tractor, the amount of use, and the severity of conditions can affect the requirements.

22. I'm not familiar with  all of the terms and abbreviations used.

    We've put together an abbreviation and general terms glossary to help you learn the ropes.

• Ballast & Weights - Ballast and weights are used for additional traction and to counter balance implements.  The main ballast options are liquid tire ballast (calcium chloride/water mix inside tubes), bolt on wheel weights, bolt on front weights, and 3PH weights (add-on weight boxes or bars).
• Hydraulics - Compact Tractors have hydraulic pumps that provide power to the 3PH, power steering, and implements
• Implements/Attachments - Ground working equipment that attaches to the tractor (mowers, tillers, FEL's etc.)
• Differential Lock - Used to lock the 2 rear wheels when one side is spinning, resulting in better traction.  Only to be used temporarily when additional traction is needed
• Draft Control - Controls the hydraulic pressure to the 3PH.  Holds the 3PH at a set level for depth control
• Dry Clutch - Stops all tractor movement, transmission and PTO.  A safety feature for the HST's
• Draw Bar - Basically a tow hitch 
• 2WD = 2 Wheel Drive - Non 4WD tractors are rear wheel drive
• 3PH = 3 Point Hitch - Consists of 2 link arms and one top link making the 3 points for attaching implements to the rear of the tractor (mowers, blades, tillers, etc.)
• 4WD = 4 Wheel Drive - Tractor sends power to all 4 wheels resulting in  much better traction and productivity
• BH = Backhoe - Consists of 2 arms and a bucket connected with hydraulic cylinders.  It mounts to the rear of the tractor either to the 3PH, onto a subframe, or directly onto the frame of the tractor.  Primarily used for digging holes, ditches, and trenches.
• CUT = Compact Utility Tractor - Tractors with less than 50hp, 3 point hitches, and PTO's.  Larger than a subcompact and smaller than a utility tractor.
• CYL = Cylinder - Compact tractors are powered by 3 or 4 cylinder engines
• DIY = Do-It Yourself
• DSCV = Dual Selective Control Valve - Usually joystick or lever operated.  Used to distribute and divert hydraulic fluid for controlling implements and attachments
• EROPS = Enclosed ROPS - Generally a hard or soft weather tight cab
• FEL = Front End Loader - A bucket attached to a subframe and mounted to the tractor, works off of the tractors hydraulics 
• FOPS = Falling Object Protective Structure - Protects the operator from falling objects, also a grille gaurd protects the tractor from damage caused by falling material
• GPM = Gallons Per Minute - The rating for the output on hydraulic pumps.  Generally higher GPM = higher lift capacity and the ability to handle larger equipment 
• GST = Glide Shift Transmission - A gear transmission that does not require clutching to change gears or direction.  Also known as clutchless shifting or syncreverser
• HP = Horsepower - The rating of how much power the engine or PTO produces
• HST = Hydrostatic Transmission - The most efficient and productive transmission, similar to an automatic transmission.  It usually has 2-3 ranges (high/low or high/medium/low) and a forward and reverse pedal.  No clutching needed to change directions
• IPTO = Independant PTO - The PTO can be turned on or off while moving or while stopped, it runs continuously until turned off or the dry clutch is engaged
• JD = John Deere
• MCS = Material Collection System - Used to collect grass clippings etc.
• MF = Massey Ferguson (brand name) 
• MFG = Manufacturer
• MFWD = Mechanical Front Wheel Drive - Also know as front wheel assist, you manually engage the tractor into 4WD
• MM = Mid-Mount - An implement that attaches under the tractor just in front of the rear wheels.
• NH = New Holland (brand name)
• PS = Power Steering - Uses the tractor hydraulics to assist with steering, making it easier to steer
• PTO = Power Take-Off - The power source for most powered implements, most commonly at the rear of the tractor and run at 540 RPM.  Many tractors also have a mid or front PTO as well, and usually run at a higher RPM.  The 2 main types are a transmission driven PTO (PTO stops when tractors stops or changes gears) and a Live PTO (PTO runs continuously)
• R1 = Ag Tread Tire - Provides the most traction in soft terrain (has the most bite), a narrow tire with a high lug
• R2 = Ag Deep Tread Tire - Similar to the R1 but with a deeper tread used in wet or muddy conditions.  Not common
• R3 = Turf Tire - A soft treaded tire causing the least damage to lawns.  A wider, smoother tire best on hard surfaces
• R4 = Industrial Tire - Similar to tires on construction equipment and possibly the most poplular.  Similar width to the R3's with a more aggressive tread but less damaging than the R1's.  Best all round tire with good bite, good traction, even ground compaction, and long wear.
• RM = Rear-Mount - Indicates that the implement mounts at the rear of the tractor
• ROPS = Roll Over Protection Structure (Rollbar) - Protects the operator from falling objects and in tractor roll overs.  A seat belt should be used to avoid be thrown in the event of a roll over.  Many ROPS are foldable to assist where low overhead is a problem
• RPM = Revolutions Per Minute - Used when describing PTO speeds and many other applications
• SCV = Selective Control Valve - Usually joystick or lever controlled.  Used to distribute and divert hydraulic fluid for controlling implements and attachments
• SMV = Slow Moving Vehicle
• SS = Shuttle Shift - Used with gear (manual) transmissions.  The shuttle shift is a forward/reverse lever to change directions without having to change gears
• SSS = Syncronized Shuttle Shift - The syncronizing mechanism ensures smooth effortless shifting
• SYN = Synthetic 
• TL = Tractor/Loader - Generally a construction tractor fitted with a permanent FEL
• TLB = Tractor/Loader/Backhoe - Generally a construction tractor fitted with a permanent FEL and BH
• ZTR = Zero Turning Radius -  Turning on a dime.  Your tractors (usually a zero-turn mower) turning wheels are in the back allowing the tractor to pivot on the front inside tire for turning 180°

23. What's the difference between tractor categories?

         When comparing tractors it is important to look beyond HP. While hp is important all it really does is allow you to run larger implements. A 24hp garden tractor is far inferior to 18hp compact diesel tractor and less powerful. Be sure to consider weight, lift capacity, features, and warranty as well.
